The Brickwork Poets are a group of writers from the Reading area. The name was chosen because our surroundings were once rich in clay deposits ideal for making bricks and tiles. With the arrival of the railway, there was an upsurge in construction and many Victorian buildings, from terraced houses to the Old Town Hall (shown above), were beautifully ornamented with terracotta. In Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy renamed Reading 'Aldbrickham' because of its dinstinctive red and grey brickwork.
